Choosing the right

pillow for good sleep

Just like having the right mattress, selecting the right pillow is vital for our quality of sleep. It can help to prevent any pains and long-term sprain on our neck and spine, whilst ensuring we get the most comfortable night’s rest we need.

Since we spend 1/3 of our lives asleep, it’s more important than ever to invest in the best products for good rest. Find out the exact reasons why having the correct pillows are important for your sleep and lifestyle…

A Good Pillow is designed to keep the spine in natural alignment

It’s so important that your pillow helps to align and support your neck in a natural position, otherwise it can cause long-term pains and strains- affecting your daily life. The human neck curves slightly forward to sustain the weight of our heads, so this position also needs to be contained when lying down.

If your pillow is too high when sleeping on your back or sideways, this will cause muscle strain on the back of the neck and your shoulders due to the abnormal position. What’s worse, this position may also cause narrowing of the air pipe which can hinder sleep due to snoring and breathing obstruction. But if your pillow is also too low, it can cause neck muscle strain, too.

The ideal pillow should maintain a height of 4 to 6 inches to properly support the head and neck.

Your Pillow must feel comfortable

To gain the best quality rest and feel relaxed while sleeping, it’s essential that your pillow is comfortable to lie on. Although this may seem like an obvious point to make, many people do sleep on uncomfortable pillows that may be contributing to their poor quality of sleep.

Having a comfortable pillow surface is key to a comfortable sleep, too. For example, cotton pillow cases are great for comfort and keeping you cool at night, whilst silk is also a soft option that has benefits for your skin.

Your Pillow should be adjustable

Having a pillow that moulds to your individual head and neck shape is perfect for comfortable sleep. Ensuring that your neck and spine align in the natural position will help you to wake up feeling refreshed.

Pillows for each sleep position

  • Sleeping on your back: If you sleep on your back, the height of your pillow should be lower than in the sideway sleep position. Try placing a pillow beneath your knees to further align any strains.
  • Sleeping on your side: If you tend to sleep on your side, it’s important to maintain a straight and natural position for your spine- meaning weight should be evenly distributed to prevent any unnecessary pressure. For extra comfort, place a small pillow under the waist whilst lying to provide additional support.
  • Sleeping on your stomach: For stomach sleepers, a flat pillow is ideal as this will keep the spine in it’s natural alignment. It’s also advised to sleep directly with your head on the mattress, but if this isn’t an option then placing a pillow underneath your stomach is a great way to provide extra support for your spine.

Please note: It is important to know that your neck may hurt a little during the first few days of using any new pillow because it is still adjusting to the contour, but you’ll find a lot of comfort once your body is used to the change.
